Who is FIRST?
FIRST is a multinational, non-profit organization that aspires to transform culture, math, science, engineering and technology as cool as sports. First is an acronym which means:
F or
I nspiration and
R ecognition of
S cience and
T echnology.
FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen who was an inventor himself. FIRST operates robotics competitions in which teams design and assemble a robot that is capable of performing a specified task in competition with other high school teams. These teams are made up of students who are sponsored and assisted by local companies and volunteers. FIRST is also in charge of the Lego League which is for children ages 9 - 14. FIRST's mission is to design engineering and technical programs in schools to build self confidence and to motivate young people to participate in the modern age.
